Pizza is a staple in our house, so naturally Stromboli comes into the mix as well. I haven’t made it in awhile since I used to get my dough from Fresh and Easy which shut down, but saw dough while at Trader Joe’s today and decided it was time to give a new dough a try. I personally like Stromboli because I’m not a pizza sauce girl and this doesn’t include sauce on the inside. I can still make my husband happy though by getting him sauce to dip his in. I use pre made dough as well as pizza sauce when I make this as it saves time, but if you have extra time go ahead and make everything from scratch!
Shopping List/Ingredients: (I got everything from Trader Joe’s for about $8!!!)
- pizza dough
- pizza sauce for dipping (if you want it)
- 8 ounces of shredded mozzarella
- pepperoni (or any toppings you want I like making veggie ones too)
- 1 egg
- 1 tablespoon of water
Pre heat your oven to 500 degrees.
First roll out the dough into a large rectangle on a floured surface. If you want pizza sauce inside your Stromboli go ahead and spread it on now leaving at least a 2 inch border on each side.
Next sprinkle half the cheese in the center, followed by peperoni or your toppings, and then the remainder of the mozzarella.
In a small bowl mix together an egg and a tablespoon of water, then brush over the edges of the dough to help it seal.
Now for the trickiest part, folding. Go ahead and fold the 2 ends over, then use the parchment paper (don’t use foil as I did!) to help you fold over the sides so that it’s all sealed up. Then flip it onto another piece of parchment paper so that the seam is facing down. (If you use foil to cook like I did be sure to spray a little cooking spray to stop it from sticking)
Go ahead and brush your egg wash over the top and sides (it will give it that golden brown color and nice texture) and cut a few shallow slits in the top. Then pop it in the oven for 10 minutes. If after 10 minutes you think it needs a little more time decrease the oven temp to 375 degrees and cook a few minutes longer.
Let it sit for about 5 minutes and then slice it on open!
